Morning Routines- are they that important?
My partner recently said “I have never met anyone who has stronger routines than you”. I had never noticed this about myself. Then I really started noticing what I do each morning and how when I make small adjustments it can shape my entire day. For example, when I spent time scrolling through social media in the morning I found myself reaching for my phone more during the day. When I stretch and lay on my acupressure mat (or pokey mat as we call it in our house) my body feels less pain during the day.
Living with chronic pain can make simple tasks such as getting out of bed in the morning be a struggle, let alone facing the day ahead. Having a morning routine can help ease the nervous system and help us feel more ready to take on the day.
Here are the top 3 reasons that I continually show up for my morning routine:
Reduces stress and anxiety
Living with chronic pain and fatigue can be stressful, which can lead to increased anxiety and tension. Knowing what comes each morning promotes a sense of safety, security and control that I don’t often get moving through life with Fibromyalgia. Additionally, having a morning routine that includes relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation can help calm the nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety levels.
Sets the tone for the day
When you wake up feeling groggy and in pain, it's easy to get stuck. However, by having a morning routine, you can take control of your day and start it off on a positive note. This can help you feel more energized, focused, and prepared for the challenges ahead.
Hot tip! Incorporate music into your morning routine to amplify the tone of your day (pun intended 😉). For example, feeling anxious- listen to calming music, need some energy- listen to something upbeat.
helps manages symptoms
If you know that stretching in the morning helps alleviate your pain and stiffness, you can prioritize time for that. Additionally, establishing a consistent sleep schedule and waking up at the same time each day can help regulate your body's natural rhythms and improve sleep quality.
You might be thinking, “these are great reasons to have a morning routine, but how the heck do I start one?” I got you!
